Barbara Morgan

about

Barbara J. Morgan was born in Ganado, AZ in the late 1940's. She attended parochial schools before going to the Institute of American Indian Arts for two years. It was at this time she learned Traditional Techniques taught by Josephine Wapp, Comanche. Another teacher, Otellie Loloma taught BJ ceramics. Painting in oils and acrylics was instructed by Fritz Scholder and BJ developed her style with his help. By learning about Native American history, arts, and literature, BJ found a place in fine arts. Living in Shiprock NM has always been a place of comfort and where BJ raised her 4 sons.
BJ has taught Navajo Language & Culture after earning her degrees from UNM and Prescott College.
BJ's sculpts fabric Navajo ladies reflect a time in history where Navajos faced war with the Spanish and American intruders. Silversmithing was adopted and developed during the early 1800's.
The ladies wear the biil and moccasins. Chiih or red ochre is used as a sun block and also adds beauty to the ladies' faces.
